So I’m at a crossroad here with these two databases. I wouldn’t by any means declare myself a database wizard and do not make use of the more sophisticated features of enterprise level databases. My only direct database experience has been with MySQL 4.x.x for a few simple web apps and sites.
I’m getting ready to step this up quite a bit and was starting to look at Postgresql for a few ideas. I know MySQL 5 is on the way with stored procedures and triggers being touted in every article. I hear many religious arguments between the two, but Postgres is out of beta and has had these features quite a while now - read thoroughly tested. Also it seems that the advocates for Postgres are conviced there are other features in postgres that are not going to be found in the new version of MySQL 5. I for one would like to know what these features are and how they affect me. Also I would like some opinions on if the change to the postgres syntax is worth the switch from the already familiar mysql syntax. Is there any real difference between the two syntaxes?

I find that running three different sites for different reasons is a bit repetitive. As some of you may know, I run EliteDesignStudios.com, this blog at Buck Wild and Robinson Stuff. The first is a name I used for myself when I was freelancing and has not been updated in nearly 3 years. The second was a online portfolio for myself which I also failed to update on a regular basis which after finding myself at a stable job for the first time in 4 years I had turned it into this blog. The last of which has received the most updates of recent mainly because I first made it for my daughter which is now 9 months old. I wanted a site that I could control that would let my wife upload pictures to it without me helping.
Let’s talk about this third site for a moment. I thought why should my wife and I be the only people allowed to share their memories and pictures on there. So I decided to open up a free photo upload and sharing service to the community as a no charge service. Unfortunately juggling a job, an extremely busy workout schedule, and a fairly new daughter, plus two other web sites didn’t leave me with a whole lot of time for testing the site. I use it, and occasionally make improvements when I feel I need to. I would really like to redesign the site. From parts of the code to the look and feel. I just do not have time right now, and more importantly I don’t have any active users on this site submitting suggestions on how to make the site better. Making the improvements is a no brainer for me. That’s what I like to do. Testing and using the actual product… hmmm, not really my cup of tea.
What I want,
is to get more feedback on this site (which will be renamed) from active users. I accept all criticism as long as it’s constructive. I will also be archiving EliteDesignStudios.com and moving this blog to a sub-section of the new sight so I can focus my energy on one project.
Scott Moschella has made his own Gimp.app for OS X users. The difference between his and the one provided by Mac Gimp or the fink and darwinports versions… his has been retooled to look like photoshop.
The menus and tools have been renamed to resemble photoshop tools and menu options. The shortcuts have been reworked as well. I’m usually not a big gimp user as I’m very fast with photoshop and get frustrated with Gimp very easily, but this could change that. I’ve used this version of Gimp a little and I must say it’s pretty thorough. The shortcut changes alone make this very usable for production work now. Since the most popular DTP app is photoshop I think this is a definite plus for the application.
I can definitely recommend this for any photoshop user looking to explore Gimp, or just willing to ditch his pirated copy of photoshop.
